2019-2020 ALiEM Faculty Incubator: 6 Reasons To Get Excited!

The ALiEM Faculty Incubator is thrilled to announce that applications are now open for its FOURTH year! We plan to build on the success of the last 3 years to create the best Faculty Incubator yet. The deadline to apply is Thursday, January 31 at 5 pm EST. Check out 6 reasons to get excited below.

1. Build your network

Our last 3 cohorts have included junior and mid-career educators from all fields of medicine (including EM, IM, Peds, GI, and Pulm/Critical Care), who range the educational spectrum from pre-clinical to clinical. Get to know your colleagues from across the country & the world (our members have come from as far as Chile, Australia, and India!) and collaborate on projects.

  • Develop multi-institutional projects
  • Tap into resources beyond your local educational community with instant and continuous access to brilliant minds across North America

2. Lots (and we mean lots!) of scholarly opportunities

There is no better way to improve your scholarly output than by channeling the energy and expertise of this community of practice.

This year’s group:

  • is in the process of publishing a number of peer-reviewed papers (so many, we kinda lost count!)
  • has drafted a series of blog posts for the popular ICE-ALiEM collaboration Education Theory Made Practical (which will become Volume 3 of the popular e-book published by last year’s cohort)
  • has presented (and are planning to present) at national conferences

3. Put some method behind the madness

You are all creative and innovative educators, but how often are you able to communicate the theory behind what you are doing? Learn how to apply education science and theory to your projects, both big and small. Use what you learn to more effectively communicate with educator colleagues and market your projects to higher-ups! There is a certain shibboleth for educators that you will certainly learn about by hanging out with all of us!

4. Connecting & Networking

We know there will be an incredible group of peers and mentors joining the program next year. Our handpicked mentors will provide guidance and experience as we discuss all things education. No topic is too big or too small! From large group discussions about tackling common education conundrums (e.g. How can you successfully pitch an education project to your Dean’s office?) to monthly small-group mentorship meetings with career advice, you will find support, encouragement, and guidance at every step. Check out the list below for all the great people that we know you’ll meet – and then don’t forget there are all the incredible fellow Incubatees that will start with you in the same year!

5. Comprehensive curriculum

The curriculum this year will include a wide range of topics, including Digital Scholarship, Teaching and Learning with Technology, and Educational Theory and Study Design. Through weekly discussions and monthly small-group projects, you will take a deep dive into topics that are highly pertinent to today’s education scholar. You will gain insight and knowledge that you can take into your workplace, whether you are the director of simulation, an assistant program director, or clinical educator.

6. Have fun while learning!

This curriculum is designed to work for you! We all understand the demands placed on your time. We have small monthly projects as well as a longitudinal project that are designed to not only give you an opportunity to apply what you have learned, but also help you publish high-quality peer-reviewed education literature. The Faculty Incubator is a supportive, collaborative group that gives you back what you put in. In following with social constructivism theory, much of your growth will come from online discussion with your peers and mentors and subsequent application to your educational environment (Kolb’s learning cycle).

Sara Krzyzaniak, MD

Assistant Residency Program Director and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of EM at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria

Sara’s professional interests are in resident wellness, remediation of struggling learners, and residency curriculum development. She has several national presentations as well as peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on these topics.

Michael Gottlieb, MD, RDMS

Assistant Professor of EM and the Ultrasound Director at Rush University Medical Center

Mike has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, is a peer-reviewer for 20 journals, Associate Editor for the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine, and the Social Media Editor for Academic Emergency Medicine. His academic interests include resident education with a focus on ultrasound and procedural applications.

Teresa Chan, BEd, MD, MHPE, FRCPC

Assistant Professor in the Division of EM at McMaster University

Teresa’s interests include residency assessment, physician cognition & communication, and online teaching and learning. She serves on the ALiEM Board and was an Editor of the ALiEM MEdIC series. As her department’s Continuing Professional Development Director, she has written over 100 peer reviewed publications. She has been selected as a top reviewer for Academic Medicine twice, and serves on the editorial boards of 5 journals.
