CRincubator Live

A one-time Chief Resident Incubator event to help EM Chief Residents kickstart their year
May 6, 2020

What is the CRincubator Live event?

As we close our doors to the Chief Resident Incubator (affectionately termed the “CRincubator”) after 5 years of longitudinal leadership development, we want to share the collective wisdom of lessons learned and repeating themes from our powerhouse alumni and faculty mentor network. We created a virtual, half-day learning lab to cover critical topics. The curriculum was scaffolded by existing or prior Chief Residents, because only prior Chief Residents understand what incoming Chief Residents will be going through.

Event format

CRincubator Live aims to create an engaging and impactful experience for starting Chief Residents. The use of videoconferencing tools is not a limitation but rather a benefit for our event. We are able to recruit all-star speakers, who are too busy to travel to in-person events because of their busy clinical schedules. We are also able to reach more incoming Chief Residents, who already have inherited many leadership responsibilities during this COVID era, precluding their ability to travel.

Instead of hosting standard webinars with speakers running through theories and lists on Powerpoint slides, we wanted to create a more engaging experience. There are 3 general segments:

  1. Chief-to-Chief Narratives: A prior Chief Resident will kick off each rapid-fire segment with a situation that happened to them. Together with an expert on the topic, they will dissect the case and discuss learning points.
    • Leadership in a crisis
    • Boundary management
    • Conflict resolution
    • Manage up and across
  2. Question and Answer Panel: Panelists will discuss the most common questions that arose over the 5 years of the CRincubator. This will help incoming Chief Residents anticipate the obstacles and dilemmas to come.
  3. Breakout Brainstorm Rooms: Chief Residents will self-sort into facilitated themed breakout rooms, which cover Wellness, Education, and Scheduling. Expert panelists will serve as sounding boards for ideas and questions.

The event will be held using Zoom videoconferencing rooms.

Schedule

May 6, 2020 (11a-3p PST /12p-4p MST / 1p-5p CST / 2p-6p EST)

Perks

  • Early notification of the CRincubator print guidebook in development
  • It’s a surprise!

How to sign up

To reserve a seat in the CRincubator Live event, complete the reservation form. We will be asking for:

  • Your name and email address (to send seat reservation information)
  • Your program name
  • Your program’s Twitter handle

Cost: $49 per Chief Resident

  • Please do not share the same single-seat reservation. We will be breaking up into individual small-group rooms.
  • Why charge money for this virtual event? Shouldn’t it be free? We firmly believe that skilled educators should NOT be expected to teach for free. This is a poor precedence set in medical education that we hope to change. So we will be paying our busy speakers. To break even of this event, we will need to enroll 100 chief residents. We hope we can reach that.
