How I Podcast Smarter: The Gear

2016-12-20T19:52:04+00:00

We are back this week with a new “Working Smarter” mini-series on Podcasting. An increasing number of individuals and residency programs are starting podcasts, but it’s not always obvious how to get started.

What hardware is needed? What’s the workflow? What are the pitfalls? To help answer these questions we picked the brains of 9 star Emergency Medicine podcasters (@FOAMpodcast, @srrezaie, @TheSGEM, @stemlyns, @embasic, @Core_EM, @EM_Educator, @EMtogether, @EMCases) and asked them to share their secrets.

From dead simple set-ups to semi-professional studios, you’ll learn from veterans how to get your voice out to the public, and do it well. In this first installment, we review podcasting gear: the hardware and software you’ll need. The next installment will go over the production work-flow for taking a podcast from an idea to a finished product.

Thanks for all the suggestions… What skype recorder do you all like?

    • Benjamin Azan

There are many depending if you are on Mac or PC. https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA12395/how-can-i-record-my-skype-calls

I think the most popular one for mac is “Call Recorder for Skype”
      http://www.ecamm.com/mac/callrecorder/
      Not sure about PC.

      • Christina Shenvi

I have a PC. I’ve tried Evaer, and it worked when I tested it and then when I went to actually record with someone, it crashed.

    • I used to use Call Recorder for Skype. For some reason, maybe it was just bad internet signal on my end, but it skipped on occasion. So I’ve been using Audio Hijack. more customizable for what inputs you want, and Skype is one input option. Bummer that it’s only Mac compatible. Hmm, perhaps a Mac is in your future? Personally I think it gives you so many more options especially as you continue to delve into the podcasting and educational technologies world. Good luck!

      • Agree. Audio Hijack is the way to go. Great with Skype. What’s the screenshot from, Michelle?…the latest version of Audio Hijack?

Another option is Cast (an online service that records audio for you). We tried it for Wildcast EM, and we didn’t like it. Worth trying though.

        • Yes the screenshot is my audio hijack dashboard.

Thanks, Michelle and Rob… may need to go mac soon.
