Ok, while we congratulated the senior residents in our last piece, but let’s be honest, YOU (the junior faculty members) are the ones who TRULY should be congratulated. You’ve survived residency, and now you’re the boss!
You’re probably sighing with relief at the moment. But eventually, you’ll ask yourself: “Now, what’s next?” Well, yet again, the ALiEM MEdIC team has some resources for you!
While we congratulated and welcomed the interns with the list of Greatest Hits for Interns, it’s high time we actually congratulate and welcome you… the new Senior Residents! You’ve toiled through call shifts on off-service rotations, you’ve worked hard reviewing cases with junior residents and getting grilled you about the latest esoteric facts by the seniors! And now, you’re going to be in charge of other other residents!?! You are probably equal parts excited and scared… but more to the point you may be wondering – How does one actually be a great senior resident? Well we have some resources for you!
The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM), American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM), and the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) require successful completion of an oral examination as part of the certification process for the specialty of emergency medicine. Residents are seldom taught explicitly about the process of developing oral board examinations. While deliberate and guided practice can improve performance in such examinations, understanding the design and structure of an oral examination can also ease anxiety about the experience.
In 2016, we launched a little experiment in faculty development with an elite group of junior and mid-career faculty members from North and South America. Applications are now open for the new 2017-18 ALiEM Faculty Incubator for educator-scholars ready to take their careers to the next level — from theory to application. Applications are open NOW.

Each year we’ve generated this report we’ve been flabbergasted by how much our team continues to grow and develop. This year is no different. January is the time that the ALiEM team tends to take a step back and reflect about where we have been and where we are hoping to go!
2016 has been an incredible year. The breadth and depth of our team’s work has increased, and we have seen the launch of many new innovations and projects. Under the leadership of Dr. Michelle Lin, the ALiEM team has grown to become an international organization with over 80 volunteers all helping to not only write for the blog (such as the new IDEA series), but also to create new projects like our Faculty Incubator (affectionately known as the “Facubator”), the Fellowship Incubator (“Fincubator”), and the Wellness Think Tank.

The Case of the Honorary Authorship outlined a scenario of a senior academic scientist interacting with two more junior researchers, raising issues around publication ethics and professionalism. This month the MEdIC team (Brent Thoma, Sarah Luckett-Gatopoulos, Tamara McColl, Eve Purdy, John Eicken, and Teresa Chan), hosted a discussion around these questions with insights from the ALiEM community.
