My Year as the ALiEM-CORD Fellow in Social Media and Digital Scholarship
Everyone has a slightly different relationship with technology. For me, it has always been a tool for creativity. Whether working on video, music, or photography – I have spent more hours in front of a computer than I care to admit. I always dreamed about somehow using my experience with media development in a productive way for the medical field, but judging by the doctors who I knew in high school/college (including my parents), my impression was that physicians and the world of the internet would remain forever apart.

For all you medical education folks out there, you will know that learner assessment is a really hot topic these days. Competency-based medical education (CBME), entrustable professional activities (EPAs), milestones… These are all the fancy new terms that are floating out of most residency educator’s mouths. Design thinking is a concept that has recently taken the business world by storm, and more recently it has begun to creep into other fields, like education! At the core of it, the idea behind design thinking is to encourage designers to think about how they might solve problems that are experienced in the world – to think like engineers and architects, and focus on building solutions for end users. As a part of their fellowship, the 2014-15 ALiEM Fellows (Scott Kobner, BS and Sam Shaikh, DO) were each tasked with a different design job a few months ago.
