Welcome new ALiEM-EMRA fellow Scott Kobner

We are excited to announce our inaugural 2014-15 ALiEM-EMRA Fellow for Social Media and Digital Scholarship, Scott Kobner, who is a second-year medical student at New York University School of Medicine. Scott brings a unique perspective to ALiEM and the FOAM community. He has worn many hats in the past, which will serve him well towards being a more versatile and mature clinician. He has been an EMT and EMT trainer, a scribe, a child-life volunteer, and New York Free Clinic patient educator. His focus recently has been on improving patient education especially in the Emergency Department.

Welcome new ALiEM-CORD Fellow Dr. Sameed Shaikh

It is with great pleasure that announce our inaugural 2014-15 ALiEM-CORD Fellow for Social Media and Digital Scholarship, Dr. Sameed Shaikh, from Sinai-Grace Emergency Medicine Residency Program/Detroit Medical Center. As a PGY-2, he already has an impressive multimedia skill set, including website design, video editing, photography, and electronic music composition. He is currently using his skills for good rather than evil at his residency program to match medical education and medicine in general with currently available technological solutions.

Slide Redesign Competition Winners: International Teaching Course 2014

The International Teaching Course, now held twice annually in Baltimore, has a recurring Slide Redesign workshop and competition. Taught by Dr. Stacey Poznanski, this workshop addressed many of the widespread pitfalls which cause “death by powerpoint”. Here are the winners from the workshop competition, illustrating great examples based on Mayer’s multimedia learning theories. The examples below show the before and after slides. Congratulations to the winner, Badria Alhatali, and the close co-runners up, Nadia Awad and Kris Maday!

Basics of Blogging at 2014 CORD Academic Assembly

Turns out New Orleans is a fantastic city, not just for the food and culture, but also as a setting for the 25th anniversary year of the Council of Residency Directors Academic Assembly conference (CORD). The ALiEM crew was on hand to help teach a pre-conference workshop called #DontGetLeftBehind: FOAMed and Social Media for EM Educators, dedicated to learning tricks of the trade of the different modalities of social media for medical education. Naturally we focused our section on blogging. Rather than let all that information go to waste, we have shared our work in this post in the true spirit of collaboration!

In the last two years, live tweeting from medical and education conferences has become mainstream. What better way to stay up-to-date with what is being taught around the globe! Pioneers like Dr. David Marcus (@EMIMDoc) even archive all of the conferences with hashtags, Twitter handles, and topic focus on his EM IM Doc blog.

Creating an EM website dedicated to images: Things to consider

The folks at SUNY Downstate Emergency Medicine program have been hard at work contributing to the field of #FOAMed over the last few years (ClinicalMonster.com). Dr. Mark Silverberg, the program’s Associate Residency Director, has also been busy with an EKG website featuring 100 interpreted EKGs. And now he’s busy at it again, introducing the newest contribution to EM – an online visual atlas: www.kchemimage.wordpress.com. While the website is still in development, I wanted to discuss further with Dr. Silverberg the nuances of obtaining images and creating an EM website with it.
