It is not very often that the ERAS application process for residency positions changes from year to year. In 2018, there is going to be a new component added – the Standardized Video Interview (SVI) launched by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). All EM applicants in the 2018 application season are required to complete this interview during June 6 – July 31, 2017. Because it is such a new process, we invited key various stakeholders to the virtual table. The discussion was hosted by Drs. Michael Gisondi (Stanford) and Michelle Lin (UCSF/ALiEM).
After receiving numerous high-quality submissions, we are proud to announce the winner of the 2017 Essentials of Emergency Medicine (EEM) Education Fellowship Contest as Dr. Moises Gallegos from the Baylor Emergency Medicine residency program. It seems that the 2017 year is quickly shaping up to be one of grassroots action both politically and now in emergency medicine (EM). On May 15, 2017, we are launching a joint initiative FOR residents BY residents with Essentials of EM, EM Residents’ Association (EMRA), and the Wellness Think Tank. This event will serve to not only help centralize the conversations about wellness and resiliency, but identify some actionable items and build toolkits to help chip away at this towering problem. Happy new year! With so many exciting new blogs and podcasts out there producing wonderful clinical and professional development content, it strikes me that we may be overlooking the critical value that our star bedside clinician-educators provide for medical students and residents. Inspired by the #WhiteboardTeaching photos which Dr. Amal Mattu tweets from his ED shifts, I too started tweeting my own Post-It Pearls (#PostitPearls). In doing so, it has curiously reinvigorated my passion and dedication for bedside teaching. It has also allowed other learners and nurses to share in the teaching and learning. We are constantly on the lookout for something to add to a post-it note. Sometimes low-tech can be the answer in a digital world. Let’s make a new year’s resolution to get back to basics — bedside teaching. Anyone want to join me? Check out some recent photos.

Unless you are living under a rock, many healthcare and public media platforms are talking about the insidious problems with burnout in the health professions world. One thought leader out there is especially vocal about wellness, resiliency, and mindfulness — Dr. Zubin Damania (alter ego: ZDoggMD). For instance, do you know the difference between empathy and compassion, and why that is important to differentiate this as a clinician? We were honored to have him join the Wellness Think Tank to field questions that we peppered at him, specifically around resident wellness.
Hot off the press! The 2nd edition to the ALiEM In-Training Exam Prep Book in Emergency Medicine book is already out less than 6 months from the first edition. This 2nd edition book includes fixes for broken links, spelling and grammar errors, and ambiguous questions. Many thanks to the readership for their feedback. This book is released again in iBook and PDF form for free. Congratulations to the editors-in-chief Dr. Michael Gottlieb, Dr. Rochelle Zarzar, and Philippe Bierny, as well as the previous editors-in-chief Dr. Dorothy Habrat, Dr. Margaret Sheehy, Dr. Samuel, and Zidovetzki from the first edition. To clarify, these 250 multiple-choice questions are designated as Question Sets #1-5, because the 2016-17 Chief Resident Incubator team is working on publishing the next set of new questions.
