ALiEMCards.com

ALiEM Cards is point-of-care reference library of narrowly focused, easily digestible cards for the practicing emergency physician or learner (formerly known as PV Cards). As of July 2017 led by the team of Dr. Jeremy Voros and Derek Sifford, we have rebranded these into “ALiEM Cards” and moved away from the index-card templated PDF files. Check it out.

Why transition to a new ALiEM Cards site?

We have always tried to keep the user and learner in mind. From a readability, design, and content delivery perspective, our index card look was becoming outdated.

  1. The limited text space negatively impacted our ability to easily convey the content in a clear fashion.
  2. The topics and keywords within each card were not searchable. You just had to know where things were.
  3. PDFs are often large-sized files and not easy to read on mobile devices.
  4. The new ALiEM Cards site incorporates the use of GitHub, which allows for better version control. We can more transparently update and incorporate crowdsourced feedback and peer review. This was not possible with the older PV Cards system.

What will we be stopping?

As part of this transition period, we are announcing the following:

  1. No more new content will be written in the PDF format.
  2. We are closing out the Evernote and Dropbox shared account options.

PV Card: Palliative Care Screening in the Emergency Department

Palliative Care canstockphoto3674078What is Palliative Care? It is specialized medical care focusing on improving the care and quality of life for patients with advanced illness by decreasing suffering. It can be delivered concurrently with curative care. Early identification of patients who are likely to benefit is key. How do you decide whether your patient could benefit from a palliative care consult?

Salicylate Toxicity PV card v2: Lessons in post-publication review

I was recently the author of a PV card for management of Salicylate Toxicity, which had some discrepancy with expert opinion. The point of contention was in regards to measurement of urine pH vs serum pH for alkalinization. In preparing the first version of the card, I began with notes from a recent toxicology rotation, and expanded by examining textbooks and review articles. Although there was mention of serum pH measurement, numerous sources emphasized urine alkalinization as the primary endpoint for the treatment of aspirin toxicity. Therefore I choose to include this on the size-limited PV card.

PV Card: Focused Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Ultrasound

ultrasound dvtDeep vein thrombosis (DVT) is always a consideration when patients with asymmetric lower extremity swelling. Why is one leg. Two-point focused DVT ultrasonography of the femoral and popliteal veins can be incredibly useful in the Emergency Department when trying to narrow the differential diagnosis. Drs. Margaret Greenwood-Ericksen, Joshua Rempell, and Mike Stone provide a clear, image-based clinical reference tool on this ultrasound technique.

PV Card: Focused 1st Trimester Pregnancy Transvaginal Ultrasound

Screen Shot 2014-12-31 at 2.59.44 PMEarly 1st trimester pregnancies can be challenging to risk stratify when patient present with bleeding or pain. The pregnancy may be still too early for transabdominal ultrasonography, which was covered in last week’s PV card. The same authors, Drs. Matt Lipton, Mike Mallon, and Mike Stone provide a great bedside clinical reference tool on performing the focused transvaginal ultrasound in pregnancy.

PV Card: Focused 1st Trimester Pregnancy Transabdominal Ultrasound

Screen Shot 2014-12-31 at 2.24.08 PMAlthough history, physical, and lab tests are obtained for patients with first trimester vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain, none compare to the utility of bedside ultrasonography. Today’s PV card reviews the transabdominal approach to the focused pregnancy ultrasound and was written by Drs. Matt Lipton, Mike Mallon, and Mike Stone.
